Mixed by Tensnake - Defected In the House Mixed by Tensnake - Defected In the House.
You can’t stop it; the 90s revival is in motion and it’s led by the man known as Tensnake.

It’s pretty much a given that society, and everything that it encompasses – the economy, politics, fashion – works as a cycle. However, there’s a slightly more specific theory when it comes to music; an idea that a fairly uniform 20 year cycle can be applied to musical trends. The main argument behind the theory is that by the time an artist gets to a stage where their music is being heard by a decent amount of people, they are busy regurgitating the influences of their youth and spewing the resultant nostalgia-heavy mixture over an ever-appreciative audience.

So, according to said theory, as the ‘naughties’ fade into dimly lit recent memory, it seems to be the turn of the 90’s to become the dominant influence on the musical landscape.

Love it or loath it the 90s influence is filtering through – especially in dance music – slowly replacing the retro-disco sounds with early house beats. You can hear this in the work of ‘Hercules and Love Affair’, ‘Riva Starr’ and the Boston hipsters ‘Soul Clap’, with the last of this group not just playing the music but also hosting 90s inspired warehouse parties for those in the know. And we won’t even get started on the upsurge in back to ‘95 events.

It’s this 90s phenomenon that has inspired one particular artist from Hamburg, Germany to create some outstanding work. Tensnake, known to his mother as Marco Niemerski has been charged as being a ‘oneman 90’s revival machine’, the catalyst for this being a podcast that he produced for the well respected dance music website Resident Advisor at the end of 2009. The sites reputation is such that its influence can be compared to the power of Vogue in the fashion world. Tensnake produced a podcast for them that was instantly circulated and adopted by many dance music aficionados who recognised it as a refreshing and eclectic take on house. Heavily 90s dance music inspired it became an instant classic mix.

Tensnake himself is greatly inspired by that period in musical history; “I started buying vinyl in the 90’s and was really into vocal house and deep house” says Marco. “It was also my first proper experience of going out and partying. I think that the 90’s were definitely the most important period in my life, music-wise. I was a massive fan of DJ Sneak and Romanthony and all the US house guys.”

The other factor that adds to Tensnake’s mystique is the unexpected success of his current production ‘Coma Cat’, a retro-inspired track that contains a respectful nod to disco boogie as well as retro house. It has jumped onto the national radio playlists, and at the time of writing it has just been added to Radio 1’s B list. No mean feat if you take into consideration that it was a cool underground dance track that gained momentum in Ibiza and now is about to cross over into the land of pop. Now, everyone from Aeroplane and Friendly Fires to Pete Tong and Annie Mac and the entire Radio 1 daytime crew are supporting ‘Coma Cat’.

Not wanting to stop there, Marco produced a new mix for Defected Records, based around the feeling and vibe of the original Resident Advisor podcast. He has put together a new selection of the tracks that initially were things he just liked to play and were not supposed to be in the perfect DJ mix. The end result is two eclectic CDs containing some pretty special moments which we think presents Tensnake sound in the purest form.

Check out the track Wolf+Lamb’s Zev 'Don't Break It' (Kenny Glasgow & Jonny White Remix); a downtempo sex track with a real dirty groove. With each consecutive track you’ll find that each one has its own feeling, notably Carol Williams ‘Can’t Get Away’ a classic disco boogie moment and a personal favourite of Tensnake’s. Rounding off this mix is The Chemical Brothers ‘Swoon’ remixed by the legendary Lindstrom and Prins Thomas. On the second mix you’ll find a DJ Sneak track (Sneak Essentials 'In Da Clouds' (Da Original Dub), and the Heaven and Earth 'Prescription Every Night' track which is truly excellent. It also features Tensnake’s own ‘Coma Cat’ and Âme 'Fiori' (Dixon Beat Edit). The mix ends on the uplifting Phase II 'Reachin' (Original Brotherhood Mix), which is the ultimate 90s feel good moment.

There is currently a mass response to the 90’s, with more people than ever actively searching for music influenced by the decade. Luckily for them, there are plenty of places to find it, starting here.
