Der Club :

Bericht: Written by Pepe Roselló, founder and owner

A cosmopolitan isle since ancient times, Ibiza was taken over by the hippies, who made it their refuge and brought music culture with them; it was the beginning of what it is today: the most famous island around the world.

In 1963 I began a new business and opened the very first disco in Ibiza, in San Antonio; I called it Playboy, which was a very transgressive name for the time. It was something completely new, we had live music and there were many famous faces, internationally known, who visited and left their stamp on the place. It was here, in Playboy, where disco music started to sound for the first time, a crazy and unthinkable sound for Ibiza until then.

From San Antonio to Playa den Bossa, I took a leap across the island to what still is today the apple of my eye: Space Ibiza. It was a concept I had in mind, a dream really, of people dancing in broad daylight. And we made it, we got through the people, we transmitted the happiness that I imagined when dancing under the sun. It was a ground-breaking idea, we opened when no one else did, I think that dancing in daylight is something special, and so did everyone else, it was a total success. Ever since, Space Ibiza has been the icon of daylight parties.

1989 was a year to remember, Space Ibiza opened its doors. It was the only club in the world where one could dance in daylight, everybody wanted to come, and even the best DJs of the moment wished to be a part of it, it was the place to be!

Little by little, people could enjoy various atmospheres and varied musical styles as the different arenas began to take shape. It was in 1994 when Space Ibiza threw one of its first parties with international DJs, it was a promotion to introduce Red Bull in Ibiza and the line up included Sven Vath and Marc Spoon, the kings of techno and trance at that time. Since then, we’ve had great parties: Up Yer Ronson with Sasha, Renaissance with Dave Seaman and John Digweed, React with Carl Cox and even live acts such as Reel 2 Real with Erick Morillo at the turntables.

Back in 1999 we created, together with Darren Hughes and Danny Whittle, the famous marathon 22 hour Sunday parties, starting at 8am on Sunday until 6 am of next Monday. We had a lot of different DJs that played diverse musical styles so people could go from one arena to the other and choose the place they liked best. These parties became the meeting point for Ibiza residents and a must attend for everybody else on the island.

In London in 2001, we were awarded Best Club in the World by the Dance Music Awards and we did not expect it at all. Next year, the DMA awarded We Love as the Favourite Party. 2002 was also when Carl Cox decided to set his own residency every Tuesday in Space, it was something very special to me and it meant a before and an after: Space’s nights are now in the agendas of clubbers from around the world.

2005 was, again, a very important year for us. We had to make more room in our award cabinet because we were once more awarded as Best Club in the World, and in two different contests: The Winter Music Conference and The House Music Awards.

The 2006 season was quite special. Space grew even stronger, we were visible to national and international clubbers and media and our professionalism and good work obtained us yet another award. This time the prestigious English magazine M8 elected Space Ibiza as the Best Club, and Carl Cox nights were nominated on the Ibiza DJ Awards as Best Club Night.

In 2007, DJ MAG England did a vote among one thousand of the finest DJs of the moment and they select Space Ibiza as Globe’s Finest Club. By end of the year Paris’ FG DJ Awards informs us that Ibiza and Space Ibiza have been awarded as Best Vacation Destiny and Best Club, respectively. What a nice surprise, it was the very first time that such important awards selected a city as favourite destination. We were so proud! Space was on the very top. David Guetta collected the prize and stated that Space Ibiza was an electronic music temple. What an honour! Thank you Paris!

Space’s history changes in 2008. New government law forbids morning parties and we are obliged to focus on evening-night parties. So, we had to be creative and develop fresh initiatives, such as in-house parties BE and Mondays Calling, and associations with promoters such as Madrid’s Goa. Our hard work and enthusiasm were once again appreciated by the crowd and Spanish Deejay Mag nominates Space Ibiza as Best Spanish Club.

2009 begins with the right foot on the ground. We have a well deserved 3rd position on DJMAGs Top 100 Clubs chart. And we got engines running at full throttle... 7 days a week, 7 major parties... this is Space’s new phase... a party for all your senses.

2010 was a great season. We started up the year with a major festival in Sydney and Space Ibiza On Tour reached the 4 cardinal points of the planet. We even obtained Deejaymags first prize as Best Club of the Year.

Space Ibiza is ready to surprise its fans and admirers with yet another season of excellence. This will be our 22nd season and we celebrated it with a massive and spectacular Opening Fiesta last May 29th..
